An imaginary conversation between two would-be disciples. If you could sort out the ending, that would be good.
A: Well what do you think?
B: Think about what?
A: About Jesus
B: O Jesus?
A: Yes, Jesus.
(pause)
A: Well, what do you think!
B: Well I think he’s more like John the Baptist
A: John the Baptist?
B: Yes, because he’s been out in the wilderness for those 40 days, he’s a bit of a wanderer, a bit of a loose canon, and upsets people with his words, so I think he’s more like John the Baptist. Why, what do you think of him?
A: What do I think?
B: Yes, you do think occasionally, don’t you?
A: It’s been known.
(pause)
B: Well, what do you think?!
A: Well I think he’s more like Elijah.
B: Elijah?
A: Yes, Elijah, because Elijah was a bit of a miracle worker, and so is Jesus. Elijah knew what he was talking about and Jesus seems to be quite clear what he is talking a bout and it seems to be the same sort of things Elijah said.
B: I suppose. Of course I heard my neighbour say he was more along the lines of the prophets.
A: The prophets?
B: Yes, the prophets
(pause)
A: Well go on, why is he more like the prophets
B: Because of the things he says. He’s a man with a message and he believes it is from God. This is no selfish agenda. He’s in the same tradition as all those great prophets of old: it’s a bout justice and looking after the poor and the widow. I can see in him what they see in him: he is a bit of a prophet.
A: Yes, you might be right. He seems to be a bit of everything.
B: Well everyone sees something different in him. Why did you ask?
A: I was just wondering.
B: Wondering?
A: Yes,on occasion.
B: And where did wondering get you?
A: Well that’s just it. Wondering doesn’t seem to get me anywhere. I just get confused.
B: Nothing new there then.
A: I just wonder what matters to Jesus: do we say he is the Baptist, Elijah, or a prophet.
B: Perhaps you should stop wondering and start wandering.
A: Wandering? Where?
B: Following after Jesus. He keeps saying: come and follow me. Maybe if we wandered more and wondered less, we’d have a better idea what to think about Jesus.
(pause)
B: Well what do you think?
A: I think what matters most is following
B: Well then, let’s go
