This is great: a team of runners are carrying their own version of the olympic torch (instead of a flame they have a GPS which so you can track them online) but instead of doing it the commercial way like the official torch relay (good for some sponsorship and money more than anything else - or is that just me being cynical?) where they jump on a bus more then actually run and have overnights in hotels and wimpy stuff like that, the real torch relay is run 24/7 all through the night every step of the way. It is taking the exact same route as the official path but is bring run by real runners and there is no support bus or cameras or even crowds. But any donations are given to CHICKS who provide respite care for children.
Surely this is far more olympian than the commerial arm of the olympic torch which is there to make money, hype the games and get us excited. These are real runners, all 2000 of them who run at least 10km a day and also through the night. I'm impressed and is the true Olympic spirit. Real athletes and not just people who can afford the cost to carry the official torch. Here are the runners. We salute you.
So good are they that tonight they overtook the official relay and will end up in London almost a week before the real thing. Why did I only hear of this today on Radio 4? I want to follow that relay and support them. You can sign the petition that asks that they are allowed to finish the relay in the Olympic Stadium here.
This is the kind of following Jesus seems to ask us all to get up to: just take the initiative, do it properly and not for show, and go the distance.
